*Note: This in-person workshop is limited to 6 participants. 

This 2-day hands on workshop led by cinematographer Josh Marr will give you the requisite training to successfully use the WFG’s Bolex 16mm cameras, and hand-process their own film.

Users who finish this workshop can rent these cameras for use in their film productions.

Please note you must be a member with a production add on to rent equipment at the WFG.

Topics to be covered:

  • Camera prep
  • Operation of camera and accessories
  • Loading and downloading of Film
  • Basics of Light meter Operation
  • Care and cleaning during use
  • Lens care, operation and theory
  • Hand-processing black and white 16mm film 

Participants will get a chance to shoot a test roll during the workshop and will leave with a test roll of their own and one additional rental of a Bolex to shoot that roll. 

Instructor Bio
Josh Marr is a multi-faceted filmmaker from Winnipeg working in documentaries, feature films, television and artworks. His work has premiered at IFF Rotterdam, TIFF, Hot Docs, Sydney Underground Film Festival and Moscow International Film Festival. Josh is known for his experimental work as director of photography, using in-camera and analog effects, trick lighting and photography; all prominently featured on Mike Marynuik's The Goose, Andrew Shapter's hybrid docudrama Teller and the Truth and Ryan McKenna's Controversies exhibited at MOMA (New York). He has created advocacy and communications films for not for profits including War Child campaigns and gala fundraisers; and has created video learning platforms that teach environmental awareness curriculums for Wildsight used in schools across British Columbia. Josh is a longstanding member of the Winnipeg Film Group, IATSE union 669, specializing in underwater photography. He is a former board member and instructor at Cineworks, Vancouver and taught analog film techniques at Capilano University for many years. Josh currently resides in Toronto and Vancouver.

The Winnipeg Film Group reserves the right to cancel any course where the minimum registration has not been met. Anyone registered for a course that has been cancelled is eligible for a full refund, Cancelled course fees may also be used towards any other Winnipeg Film Group training programs.
