Learn How to Film and Process Colour Super 8 and 16mm Film

This hands-on workshop introduces the fundamentals of filming on Super 8 and 16mm film and guides participants through processing colour film in the darkroom. Designed for emerging and established filmmakers looking to deepen their analogue practice, the course offers both creative and technical skill-building. Each participant will leave with a positive roll of Super 8 or 16mm film that they shot and processed themselves.

Part 1 - Camera Day (January 10, 2026)

Participants will learn the basics of shooting film on super 8 cameras and the 16mm bolex cameras. As a group we will shoot some short scenes with 16mm and super 8 colour film.

Part 2 - Shooting Days (January 12 - February 6)

Everyone will have a month to borrow a WFG camera with either super 8 or bolex camera to shoot one roll of film included in the workshop fee.

Part 3 - Darkroom Day (February 7, 2026)

The group will come together to learn the methods behind processing colour film in the darkroom. Using C41 and dektol as a first developer they can process reversal that results in a positive image. We will learn how to customize images by using colour flashlights in the dark to enhance the results.

Participants will be introduced to solarization, lumen prints, and contact printing—engaging processes that expand analogue experimentation. After processing, we’ll screen the finished films on a 16mm projector. The Winnipeg Film Group (WFG) will then provide a digital transfer of each participant’s film.

Fee includes:

  • 1 roll of colour Super 8 film OR 1 roll of colour 16mm film (Ektachrome)
  • rental of a Super 8 OR 16mm Bolex camera from WFG
  • chemicals covered for hands-on film processing
  • finished positive print
  • digital scan and transfer of each film

This workshop is part of the Winnipeg Film Group’s new 2026 reduced-rate workshop program, made possible through generous support from The Winnipeg Foundation. Thanks to their contribution, we’re able to offer more affordable, hands-on filmmaking opportunities for our community throughout the year.
