“I specifically didn’t look for an overall theme for this collection. What I wanted this line-up of films to reflect was the organization’s diversity in its initial years – a rather exciting time. A co-op venture like the Film Group should always contain a multitude of voices over a dominant house style, critical accolades notwithstanding. It is that spirit which will carry our organization forward just as our armada of pioneering members cut a pathway to make “that little irregularity up on the prairie horizon” the groundswell of talent we now have. So here’s to the works of our founding filmmakers. And may our current bunch be just as fortunate in inspiring yet another creative wellspring in the years to come.” (Patrick Lowe)

Released in September 2010, BEGINNINGS 1976-1983: The Early Years, is the first of a six-DVD set celebrating films from the Winnipeg Film Group's Distribution Catalogue and history. Featuring 10 short films from the first years of the Winnipeg Film Group, this collection demonstrates the strong filmmaking talent to emerge from Winnipeg in the 1970s and why the Winnipeg Film Group was formed in the first place.

The films on all six DVDs were selected and curated by fellow WFG filmmakers and all curators are represented in one of the collections.

What is Home use?

The Home Use DVD is meant for private, home viewing only for individuals, including home schooling for up to 8 people. This DVD is not meant to be screened in front of a large group in a workshop, classroom or community setting. Please see the other use types if you wish to screen it publicly.

Any form of copying or altering of the format purchased is not permitted.

What is Community use?

This DVD is designed for non-profit and small community groups wishing to screen the film for free in an educational setting to groups of 50 people maximum.
