Participants will learn the operation of Super 8 cameras available at the Winnipeg Film Group and then shoot their own short black & white Super 8 film! We will bucket process the film by hand in the darkroom, learn how to contact print and shoot titles. Participants will edit using light tables and splicers, and can play around with tinting their films different colours. Films will be professionally scanned at 2.5K resolution by WFG. There will be a small screening at the Black Lodge on the last day!

Saturday, Feb. 8 & Sunday, Feb. 9: 11:00am-2:00pm - Film Processing and Analogue Editing

Sunday, March 2,  7:00pm-9:00pm Black Lodge Screening

 

Fee includes:

-1 roll of black & white Super 8 film (Kodak Tri-X Reversal Film 7266)

-rental of Super 8 camera for a week from WFG

-help from a knowledgeable instructor and hands on film processing & editing

-high resolution 2.5K scan of your film

-have a festival ready film submission by the end of the workshop!

Sunday, Jan. 19, 12:00pm - 2:00pm Camera Orientation

  • what is a Super 8 camera?
  • how does it work?
  • how to use an external light meter
  • time to test out cameras and ask questions
  • participants will decide when they would like to rent a camera for a week from the WFG, to have their film shot for the next workshop session on Feb 8th

 

Saturday, Feb. 8: 11:00am-2:00pm Film Processing

  • participants will bucket process their B&W film in the darkroom
  • demo on how to shoot titles on Super 8 film (we will shoot them together during this session)
  • contact printing film in the darkroom
  • how to use a Super 8 splicer and edit using a light table

 

Sunday, Feb. 9: 11:00am-2:00pm Film Processing, Film Tinting & Editing

  • analogue film editing continued, this will be a work session to continue splicing, contact printing, etc.
  • add colour to your film with a variety of tints!
  • DIY methods of digitizing film will be shown
  • participants will reel their films to be professionally digitized by the WFG
  • participants will be sent their file and may continue to digitally edit or add audio on their own time (for the screening!)

About the instructor:

Kristiane Church is an artist working in filmmaking, photography, installation, and performance. Her practice centers image and world making, the camera and positioning of body and voice. She works as a cinematographer for various filmmakers, as well as the Photography Technician at the School of Art (U of M). She has been the coordinator and projectionist of the One Take Super 8 Event put on by WNDX Festival of Moving Image for the past three years.

The Winnipeg Film Group reserves the right to cancel any course where the minimum registration has not been met. Anyone registered for a course that has been cancelled is eligible for a full refund, Cancelled course fees may also be used towards any other Winnipeg Film Group training programs.
