Unlock the magic of handmade analog cinema in this immersive, hands-on workshop that invites you to reimagine film through direct manipulation and organic processes.
Explore the art of contact printing by transforming found footage or your own 16mm negatives. You'll learn how to layer film and objects directly onto light-sensitive stock, expose them in the darkroom, and hand-process your creations—yielding one-of-a-kind results. Using a compact 16mm contact printer, you'll also experiment with transferring longer sequences of film, then process and print projectable versions of your altered footage.
Then, dive into the luminous world of phytograms—a stunning eco-processing technique. Harnessing the natural chemistry of plants, vitamin C, and washing soda, you'll create image transfers onto 16mm film. Watch as chlorophyll interacts with emulsion under sunlight or UV light, revealing the intricate textures and inner beauty of leaves, stems, and flowers.
Whether you're an analog enthusiast or a curious beginner, this workshop offers a rare chance to experiment, create, and leave with uniquely beautiful, hand-processed 16mm film art with experimental darkroom filmmaker extraordinaire, Heidi Phillips!
